Greenland: US special envoy aiming to build relationships

US special envoy Jeff Landry has begun his first official visit to Greenland amid continuing tensions over Donald Trump’s talk of taking over the Arctic territory. Landry said his visit aims to build relationships and strengthen ties, but Greenlandic leaders remain cautious, insisting the island is ‘not for sale’ and affirming the people’s right to self-determination. The visit comes as talks continue between the USA, Denmark, and Greenland following months of controversy sparked by Trump’s comments. Although Landry has adopted a more conciliatory tone, many Greenlanders remain distrustful and concerned about American intentions. Discussions during the visit have included business, healthcare and future cooperation, while debate continues over the possibility of an expanded US military presence in the region.
