France / Rwanda: memorial to 1994 genocide unveiled

Emmanuel Macron and Rwandan president Paul Kagame have inaugurated a new memorial in Paris honouring the victims of the 1994 Rwanda genocide. Unveiled on the banks of the River Seine, the monument, known as ‘The Archive’, commemorates an estimated 800,000 men, women and children, most of them ethnic Tutsis, who were killed between April and July 1994. Speaking at the ceremony, Macron described the memorial as the culmination of a long search for truth, stressing the importance of honestly confronting history as a foundation for peace. Kagame acknowledged that France had taken significant steps to recognise its part in the tragedy, while noting that the process of fully addressing the past has been lengthy and painful. The memorial, created by artist Grada Kilomba, bears a tribute to victims and survivors, preserving their voices, memories and hopes. Its unveiling is part of France's efforts to acknowledge its role in one of the 20th century's worst atrocities.
