Pope Leo XIV will not require further cancer treatment following surgery to remove a malignant growth from his right lung, according to doctors at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. Tests confirmed that the 71-year-old pontiff had a localised lung adenocarcinoma, which was successfully removed during a ninety-minute operation on 13 October. Surgeons removed the lower lobe of his right lung, and subsequent assessments indicated that additional treatment was unnecessary. The Pope, who was discharged four days later, has resumed public engagements, including his weekly general audience in St Peter’s Square. During his hospital stay, he celebrated Mass and continued diplomatic efforts concerning the war in Ukraine. He spoke separately with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, urging dialogue, peace and humanitarian access. The Vatican also hopes his recovery will allow a planned visit to Latin America in early November to proceed.
