A BBC investigation has found that some self-described infant sleep experts are offering advice which could seriously endanger babies, contradicting established medical guidance. Undercover filming revealed recommendations such as placing newborns on their stomachs to sleep and adding items like towels or muslins to cots - practices linked to a higher risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Health authorities, including the NHS, advise that babies should always sleep on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no loose bedding. Medical professionals reviewing the footage expressed alarm at unqualified individuals offering diagnoses and guidance without proper training. Since the Government’s Back to Sleep campaign was launched in 1991 by the Lullaby Trust, the numbers of unexplained infant deaths has fallen dramatically: however, this investigation has led to calls for stronger oversight and regulation. Health secretary Wes Streeting has said the Government plans to stop individuals from using the term ‘nurse’ to describe themselves, unless they are appropriately qualified.
