Mobile phones: UK adults scroll for four hours a day

A new report suggests UK adults spend an average of four hours a day on their smartphones, with more than a third of that time spent scrolling without any clear purpose. The study, based on interviews with thousands of people, found many users recognise they spend significant periods mindlessly browsing apps, social media feeds, and online content. Excessive phone use was often linked to feelings of dissatisfaction, exposure to harmful content, and a sense of lost time. Experts emphasised that the issue is not simply about personal self-control, but also about technology designed to maximise engagement through features such as notifications, autoplay, and endless scrolling. While smartphones provide many valuable benefits, including communication, navigation, and access to information, users are urged to become more aware of their habits and take practical steps to regain control, for example by limiting notifications, setting screen-time boundaries, and spending more time in offline activities. The report highlights growing concerns about digital wellbeing and the challenge of maintaining healthy relationships with technology in everyday life.
