A new report from the National Audit Office (NAO) has revealed that billions of pounds are owed to utility providers across the UK, while many households remain unaware of support schemes designed to help them manage rising costs. The report found that more than £7 billion was owed to water, broadband and energy companies by March 2025, with debt levels believed to have increased further since then. The watchdog highlighted low awareness of social tariffs, which offer discounted rates for customers on low incomes or facing financial hardship. It found that only a minority of eligible customers knew such support existed. The report also noted that household energy debt has risen sharply since 2021. The NAO called on regulators and service providers to improve communication, identify vulnerable customers more effectively, and ensure struggling households can access the help available. Consumer advocates say many people are facing increasing financial pressure and need clearer guidance on support options before debts become overwhelming.
