Government approves North Sea gas development

Andy Burnham has defended government approval of the Jackdaw gas field, around 150 miles east of Aberdeen, arguing that increased domestic production will strengthen Britain's energy security and protect jobs. Gas supplies are expected to begin within weeks, with production potentially meeting around 6% of UK demand at its peak. The project is forecast to generate £2.9 billion in economic benefits, safeguard 273 jobs and create 27 more. Ministers have also announced a £2 billion energy wealth fund, using North Sea tax revenues to support renewable and low-carbon projects. However, environmental campaigners, Green politicians and some Labour MPs strongly oppose the decision, warning that further fossil fuel extraction undermines climate commitments without necessarily reducing household energy bills. Burnham insists the government remains committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 while making responsible use of existing resources. Attention now turns to the controversial Rosebank oil field near Shetland, where a separate government decision remains pending amid continuing political and environmental disagreement.
