South Africa: Ramaphosa refuses to resign after impeachment committee is formed

Cyril Ramaphosa has refused to resign after the South African parliament announced the formation of a multi-party impeachment committee to reinvestigate allegations linked to the theft of large amounts of cash hidden at his game ranch. The controversy centres on claims that in 2020 over half a million US dollars, reportedly from the sale of buffaloes and hidden in a sofa, had been stolen - but the incident had not been properly reported. A 2022 independent report found possible evidence of misconduct, including doubts about the source of the money and the handling of the investigation. Last week, the constitutional court ruled that parliament acted improperly when it previously blocked impeachment proceedings. Ramaphosa, who has denied wrongdoing, says he will challenge the findings through legal channels. The case has intensified political tensions and renewed debate about accountability and public trust in government leadership.
