Bolivia: continuing unrest and protests against president

There is widespread unrest in Bolivia as protests and road blockades disrupt life in the capital, La Paz, and surrounding regions. Although the government has reached an agreement with protesting miners after lengthy negotiations, demonstrations by different groups are continuing. Rodrigo Paz was elected as president in 2025, a shift to the right after two decades of socialist rule. He promised to end Bolivia's worst economic crisis in four decades, marked by an acute shortage of foreign currency and fuel, and scrapped the two-decade-old fuel subsidies which had drained the treasury's international dollar reserves, but so far has failed to stabilize fuel supplies. Now he is under pressure from all sides. Inflation has increased sharply, and the prices of meat, chicken and some vegetables have skyrocketed because of the blockades. Some Latin American governments have expressed concern about the situation and urged dialogue to preserve democratic order and social peace.
