A historic day for Plaid Cymru and a new era for Wales

Rhun ap Iorwerth has been confirmed as Wales’ first minister, becoming the first non-Labour leader of the Welsh government since devolution began. Following Plaid Cymru’s historic election victory, ap Iorwerth told the Senedd it was the greatest privilege of his life. He spoke of a ‘new confidence’ for the nation and promised that his government would be there to ‘serve everyone in every community, urban and rural, old and young, whether they speak Welsh or not. Where there is common ground, we will make every effort to find it, and where unfairness and injustice threaten the fabric of our nation, we will turn that mission of kindness and tolerance into support for those who need it most.’ The expanded Senedd now has 96 members, with Plaid holding 43 seats. Reform UK, with 34 seats, forms the largest opposition group, while Labour has shrunk from 29 seats to just nine. Ap Iorwerth is expected to announce his cabinet shortly, with plans including a new public health minister role.
