A Coptic Christian content creator in Egypt has been sentenced to five years in prison with hard labour after posting online videos explaining and defending his faith. Augustinos Samaan, who has more than 100,000 subscribers, was convicted under blasphemy laws on charges including ‘misuse of social media’ and ‘contempt of religion’. Legal advocacy group ADF International is supporting his appeal, arguing that the case highlights serious concerns about religious freedom and freedom of expression. Samaan was first arrested in October 2025, with his content described as largely educational, addressing questions about Christianity and its differences with Islam. Campaigners say his case reflects a broader pattern, with reports of increasing arrests linked to online religious speech, raising concerns about growing pressure on minority faith communities despite constitutional protections.
