Iran / USA: new airstrikes threaten fragile negotiations

Tensions between the USA and Iran remain dangerously high despite ongoing ceasefire talks and diplomatic efforts. On 25 May, there were new US airstrikes on southern Iran, targeting missile sites and ships allegedly attempting to place mines near the Strait of Hormuz. American officials described the action as self-defence aimed at protecting troops and maintaining freedom of navigation. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard, claiming that it had downed a US drone and fired on other aircraft entering Iranian airspace, insisted it retained the right to retaliate against any ceasefire violations. Meanwhile, negotiations continue through mediators, including Qatar, with discussions focusing on extending the ceasefire and reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides continue to exchange warnings even as fragile diplomatic efforts continue. Breaking News: a 60 day ceasefire has been agreed subject to Trump’s approval. See https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cp3p62xddq4o
