Pakistan / China: summit reaffirms close relationship

Xi Jinping reaffirmed Beijing’s ‘unbreakable’ friendship with Pakistan during talks with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif in Beijing, as they marked 75 years of diplomatic relations. Xi pledged deeper cooperation through the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and praised Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between Iran and the United States in the current conflict. Sharif, describing the two countries as ‘iron brothers’, highlighted growing collaboration in trade, technology, defence, agriculture and infrastructure. The visit also saw the signing of numerous agreements covering climate change, education, counterterrorism, artificial intelligence and space cooperation, including plans involving Pakistani astronauts in China’s space programme. Both leaders stressed the importance of peace, regional stability and economic development, while presenting their partnership as a stabilising force during uncertain global times.
