India has given a red-carpet welcome to Myanmar’s president Min Aung Hlaing on his first official visit since taking office, signalling a strengthening of ties between the two neighbouring countries. Discussions have focussed on border security, trade and cooperation in critical minerals, including rare earth elements used in advanced technologies and renewable energy systems. India shares a long border with Myanmar and remains concerned about insurgent groups operating in border regions, while also seeking to balance growing Chinese influence in the country. Both nations pledged closer security cooperation and greater economic engagement, with plans to expand bilateral trade. The visit has also provided Myanmar’s military-backed government with an opportunity to strengthen its international standing after years of isolation following the 2021 coup. However, pro-democracy groups have expressed concern that increased engagement could lend legitimacy to military rule.
