The World Food Programme (WFP) has warned that severe funding cuts are creating unprecedented gaps in global humanitarian aid, leaving millions at risk of hunger. The agency reports a 75 per cent funding shortfall and says it is being forced to make difficult decisions about who can receive assistance. While reductions in US support have received attention, WFP officials say cuts from European donors have created the largest immediate gap. The crisis comes as famine threats increase in several countries such as Sudan, South Sudan, Somalia, and Mali. Aid workers report that malnutrition clinics are closing and vulnerable families are being turned away because resources are no longer available. Although global need has doubled over the past decade, contributions have fallen sharply, limiting the WFP’s ability to purchase, transport and distribute food. The organisation, which helped address famines in Gaza and Sudan in 2025, warns that the likelihood of further famine is rising rapidly without urgent support.
